LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's soccer team exploded for eight goals Sunday afternoon, defeating Tuskegee University 8-1 at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex.
The Tigers improve to 1-4-1 overall with the victory, while Tuskegee falls to 3-1-0. The eight-goal outburst ties the UWA program record for most goals scored in a single match, along with David Nunez tying a program record three goals in the match.
UWA wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as David Nunez opened the scoring just 4:04 into the contest. Luke Jovanovich provided the assist, giving the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
Jack Porter doubled the lead in the 20th minute, finding the back of the net at 19:36 off an assist from Oisin Griffin.
Nunez added his second goal of the afternoon at 27:42, converting a penalty kick to push the Tigers' lead to 3-0. Ethan Sharpe then capped the first-half scoring at 35:42, giving UWA a commanding 4-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Tuskegee got on the board at 59:31 when Toree Davis II scored to cut the deficit to 4-1. The Tigers answered just 11 seconds later, however, as Nunez completed his hat trick at 59:42 to restore UWA's four-goal advantage.
Mitchel Waycott extended the lead to 6-1 at 66:18, scoring off an assist from Mathias Ibanez.
Jesper Bakli added another goal in the 72nd minute, finding the back of the net at 71:42 with Kevin Garcia providing the assist.
Waycott capped the historic offensive performance at 87:08, scoring his second goal of the match off an assist from Joshua Hyche to give the Tigers the final 8-1 margin.
UWA finished the afternoon with a 21-4 advantage in total shots and put 14 shots on target. Tuskegee recorded just one shot on goal.
Nunez led the Tigers with three goals, while Waycott added two goals. Porter and Sharpe each scored once, while Bakli also found the back of the net.
Glasgow made six saves for Tuskegee, while the Tigers did not need a save from Dan Erez. UWA also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tigers will return to Gulf South Conference action on Wednesday, September 16, when they travel to Lee University for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
UWA will look to carry its offensive momentum into the road GSC contest following Sunday's record-tying performance.
