LIVINGSTON, Ala. – University of West Alabama men's soccer senior forward David Nunez has been named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week for the third consecutive week, while freshman forward Daniele Ciarlesi has been selected as the GSC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
The weekly honor marks the third straight week Nunez has been recognized as the GSC Player of the Week, making him the first GSC player to earn the award in three consecutive weeks since David Perez of Lee accomplished the feat in 2015. Nunez also becomes the first West Alabama player to earn the GSC Player of the Week honor three times in a single season since Thibault Charmey did so in 2013.
Nunez continued his standout 2026 campaign with seven points across two matches last week, helping the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over Delta State and a 1-1 draw at Spring Hill.
Against Delta State on Sept. 23, Nunez recorded two goals and an assist for a five-point performance. He finished with four shots, placing three on target, as the Tigers posted a 4-0 shutout victory.
Nunez followed that performance with the game-tying goal in the 85th minute against Spring Hill on Sept. 26. He finished the match with two shots, both of which were on target, as West Alabama battled to a 1-1 draw.
For the week, Nunez totaled three goals, one assist, seven points and six shots, with five shots on goal. He played all 90 minutes in both contests.
Ciarlesi earns his first GSC Freshman of the Week honor of his career after contributing three points across the Tigers' two matches last week.
The freshman scored the second goal in West Alabama's 4-0 win over Delta State on Sept. 23, finding the back of the net in the 38th minute. Ciarlesi recorded three shots, including one on target, while playing 27 minutes.
Ciarlesi then provided the assist on Nunez's game-tying goal against Spring Hill on Sept. 26. He played 21 minutes in the contest, giving him one goal, one assist and three points for the week.
The pair helped West Alabama post a 1-0-1 record during the week and remain unbeaten in their final two matches.
The Tigers return to action Friday, Oct. 2, hosting Christian Brothers in a Gulf South Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. at the UWA Soccer Field.
