After playing an integral role as the starting fullback and second-leading rusher on the 1971 national championship team at West Alabama (Livingston University), Robby James entered into a very successful career as a high school football coach.

After spending some time an assistant coach, James took over the head coaching reins at Catherine Academy in 1980 and retired from Marengo Academy 35 years later with a 298-116-1 career record and nine Alabama Independent Schools state championships. Inducted into the AISA Hall of Fame in 2003, he was 46-19 in 28 playoff games.

James was 113-52-1 with four state titles in 14 years before going to Morgan Academy and winning four more state championships and posting a 77-10 record over seven years. He was 69-24 at Faith Academy, but did not win a title, but appeared in the championship game three more times. In six years are Marengo, James was 39-30 with a state title.
