LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- Freshman Brittany Yeager tallied 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the West Alabama Tigers to a thrilling 64-61 win over Talladega College on Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action. The win upped UWA's mark to 2-0 while the Talladega fell to 3-5.
Talladega held a 31-28 lead at intermission, but UWA took its first lead of the game, 35-33, with 15:19 to go on an eight-footer by Yeager. The largest Tiger lead was 54-45 with 5:54 to go when Keiara Middleton connected on a traditional three-point play. Talladega clawed back to have a chance to tie it at 61-all with 3.6 seconds to go, but Danielle Padgett missed the back-end of two free throws. Erin Courington grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and nailed both free throws with 2.9 seconds left to give the game its final margin.
The Tiger defense limited Talladega to only seven field goals in thirty attempts in the second half, a cold 23.3 percent. TC outrebounded UWA 54-40 but shot only 31 percent from the floor for the game.
Jessie Clark helped the Tiger cause with 12 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half. Courington added 10 points.
Padgett paced Talladega with 19 points while Shakita Cole chipped in 13. Four Lady Tornadoes had eight rebounds each.
UWA travels to Delta State on Monday to start a five-game road trip. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
