UWA Christens 2010 at Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team opens 2010 with a New Year's Day contest at Gulf South Conference West Division foe Henderson State. Tip-off of the Friday, Jan. 1 contest is slated for 2:00 p.m. UWA (3-10) is coming off a 64-60 win over Southern Arkansas in the West Florida Holiday Classic, a victory that snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Tigers. The win marks the third straight contest decided by five points or less. The Tigers shot a season-best 48-percent from the floor on way to their first win away from Pruitt Hall since the Red and White claimed a 56-54 win at former Gulf South Conference rival Montevallo on Feb. 28, 2009. Latashia Greer carded a career-high with 29 points with 16 coming in the first half. The Dadeville, Ala.-native has led the Tigers in scoring in four straight games. The junior earned All-Tournament Team honors with her second double-double of the season, grabbing a team-leading 10 rebounds. Keiara Middleton tallied double figures for the third consecutive game with 10 points. The Birmingham, Ala.-sophomore picked up six of her 10 points in the final 20 seconds of the game from the charity stripe. In the last three outings, Greer and Middleton are averaging double figures with 23 and 13 points respectively. Greer is also the team leader on the glass during the span with 9.3 rebounds per game followed by five boards per contest from Jenni Thomley. Henderson State enters the Friday night contest on a three-game win streak following a 90-70 win over Williams Baptist on Tuesday evening. The win improved the Lady Reddies to 8-5 on the season and an unblemished 5-0 at the Duke Wells Center. In the win, five Lady Reddies' scored in double figures led by 16 points from Jazmine Ellis. Danyelle Harris paces HSU in scoring on the season with 12.3 points per game followed by Christina Hall's 10.5 scoring clip per outing. Following Friday night's affair, UWA will face Ouachita Baptist on Saturday afternoon in a 3:00 p.m. tip-off. OBU (6-4), which hosts West Georgia on Friday afternoon, dropped a 72-69 decision at Southwest Baptist in its last outing. Gabby Coleman leads the Lady Tigers in scoring with 16 points per game while Tamara Robinson is averaging 6.0 boards on the season.
