VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team dropped its third straight Gulf South Conference contest, falling 61-43 at Valdosta State on Thursday evening.
Latashia Greer scored 16 points to lead the Tigers, who fell to 3-16 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Dadeville, Ala.-junior has scored in double figures eight times this season. Erin Courington paced the Red and White on the glass with eight rebounds, tying a career mark that the Locust Fork, Ala-sophomore achieved in the season opener.
Leschelle Matthews guided the scoring effort for the Lady Blazers with 19 points followed by Michelle Thompson's 11 points. VSU (10-7, 3-0 GSC) were led on the bounds by Tamika Booker, who pulled down 10 rebounds in the outing.
Trailing by as many as 20 points in the second half, UWA managed to work the deficit down to 12 points with just less than seven minutes to play. The scoring run covered a two minute span and was capped by a pair of free throws from Nicole Dames. During the run Greer, Keiara Middleton and Larrenda Rockwell all supplied baskets.
The Lady Blazers retaliated with a 14-5 run to reach its largest lead of the game at 59-37. The Red and White scored nine of the final 11 points of the game, all from the free throw line, before suffering its sixth consecutive loss at VSU.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 as UWA hosts West Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and can be followed via live stats and a video stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
