Tigers Escape Talladega with 57-51 Victory

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The West Alabama women's basketball team escaped Talladega College with a 57-51 win on Tuesday evening to improve to 2-0 on the season. TC fell to 1-6 on the year – dropping its sixth straight contest.

UWA recorded 36 of its 57 points in the paint – outscoring the Lady Tornadoes by 32 points inside. The Red and White shot 41.5 percent from the field while TC hit 28 percent of its shots from the floor.

Latashia Greer paced a trio of Tigers in double figures as the Dadeville, Ala. product tallied 15 points. Mystee Dale added 12 points with 10 points coming from Alexis Hewitt – off the bench. Dale, LaShandra McCoy and Keiara Middleton each pulled down a team-best six rebounds in the victory.

After the two teams swapped leads over the first 12 minutes of action, UWA took control when Greer completed an old fashioned three-point play – lifting the Red and White to 13-12 lead. After fighting TC off over the next three minutes, the Tigers closed out the opening half on a 10-4 run – capped by a Dale layup. The deuce gave UWA a 29-20 lead at the intermission.

A 12-6 spurt over the first eight minutes of the second stanza gave UWA its largest lead of the game at 41-26. Middleton capped the scoring run by connecting on a pair of free throws. The Tigers held the double digit advantage until Ebony Richardson knocked down two free throws at the 5:46 mark. Richardson finished the night with a game best 17 points.

TC pulled within four points on several occasions during the final five minutes but the Tigers showed composure – toeing the charity stripe and draining four consecutive free throws to ice the hard fought contest.

Shakila Cole added 14 points for the Lady Tornadoes with Tiara Perry posting 10 points to round out the double digit scorers. Brittany Paige pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to pace TC.
