UWA Preps For UAH Chillout This Weekend

 The University of West Alabama softball team will tote its 4-0 record this weekend to Decatur, Ala. for the annual UAH Chillout. The Tigers will play six games in three days at the Wilson-Morgan Softball Complex.
 
UWA begins play on Friday, Feb. 19 with a 10 a.m. duel with Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College & State and will close out the opening day at Noon against Barry University out of the Sunshine State Conference. Saturday's activity pits the Tigers against a pair of top-five teams according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pre-Season Top 25 Poll. UWA will face No. 2 North Georgia at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. affair with No. 5 Indianapolis. The Saints of NGC finished 2009 with a 50-5 record and advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series. UI turned in a 37-21 overall mark last season. UWA closes out the weekend against Truman State at 9 a.m. and Southern Indiana at 1 p.m.

The Tigers enter the weekend slate with a pair of doubleheader sweeps over Judson College and Stilman College. The Red and White blanked SC 15-0 in the opening game and 7-2 in the second contest at the UWA Softball Complex on Wednesday. Through four games, UWA is hitting a sizzling .422 and collecting 43 hits in 102 at bats. Freshman Anna Shartzer leads the Tigers at the plate with eight hits in her first nine plate appearances, including three doubles. Senior catcher Angela Hanna paces UWA in home runs with two. In the circle, junior Katie Ford has turned in a pair of solid outings in her first two appearances as a Tiger. Ford has struck out 16 of the 34 batters she has faced and allowed just three hits. The Garden City, Kan.-native came close to posting a no-hitter against Stillman on Wednesday, but an SC bunt single nullified the opportunity.
 
Following the weekend, UWA returns to the diamond on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Miles College in Fairfield, Ala. The Tigers next home action will be on Feb.27-28 as they host the UWA Invitational.
