LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive Gulf South Conference contest as UWA (7-18, 3-5 GSC) fell 74-39 to Valdosta State at Pruitt Hall on Thursday evening. VSU (16-7) remains undefeated in GSC play at 8-0.
Lacey Griffin came off the bench to pace the Tigers offensively with 13 points. It marked the second straight game in double figures for the Westville, Fla.-junior and her second double digit effort in conference play. Griffin shot 56-percent from the field, including 50-percent from behind the arc. Dakota Powell pulled down a team best five rebounds in the setback, her second outing as the team leader this season.
Brittany Daniels led a quartet of double figure scorers for the Red and Black with a season-high 18 points. Sczeny Hartry added 14 points with 12 points from Michelle Thompson. Tamika Booker rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points. Daniels and Sierra Nixon paced VSU on the glass with eight rebounds each.
The Lady Blazers, who opened the second half on a 20-8 run, outscored the Red and White 42-17 in the second stanza to secure the victory and the series sweep of the Tigers this season. VSU reached its largest lead of the game, 36 points, with 2:09 remaining in the outing.
UWA shot 28.9-percent from the field as VSU posted a 46.4-scoring clip in the affair.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Feb.20 as UWA travels to West Georgia for pivotal GSC East Division contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcasted on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9 FM.
