Softball Tigers Blank No. 5 Indianapolis To Earn Split

Decatur, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team knocked off fifth-ranked Indianapolis 3-0 on Saturday afternoon to gain a split on day two of the UAH Chillout at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.

The Tigers (6-2) will close out the three-day event on Sunday, Feb. 21 against Truman State and Southern Indiana.

Junior Valisha Fincher broke open the scoreless game in the bottom half of the fifth with solo homerun.  The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.  In the sixth, the first three Tigers reached base as junior Lindsey Skinner led off the frame with a double, followed by an Angela Smith single.  Freshman Anna Shartzer drove in Skinner with a base hit.  Third baseman Ashley Frost laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Smith.  Tiger pitching stymied the Greyhound bats as they allowed just three hits.  Junior Katie Ford tossed six innings and posted eight strikeouts.  Senior Jessica Cervantes closed out the contest to earn her second save of the season and her 15th of her career.  Ford is now 4-0 on the season after her performance on Saturday.

In the morning match up with No. 2 North Georgia, the Tigers were blanked 9-0 in a five-inning affair.  The Saints got off to a quick start with six runs in their first at bat off of UWA starter Hannah Billingsley.  North Georgia extended the lead in the third with a three spot.  The lone Tiger hit was a bunt single off the bat of Skinner in the UWA third.

Sunday's TSU contest will get underway at 9 a.m. before UWA and USI tangle at 1 p.m.
