Pleasant Grove, Ala. – Junior pitcher Katie Ford turned in a one-hit shutout as the University of West Alabama blanked Miles College in the second game of a midweek doubleheader, 8-0. UWA claimed a 4-1 decision in the opening game.
Ford tossed four no-hit innings before giving up a single to Tiffany Roberts to start the fifth. The Garden City, Kan.-native fanned seven and walked one in the outing. She now has two complete shutouts on the season and her second flirtation with a no-hitter in a UWA uniform. Ford improved to 6-0 on the season and pushed her season's strikeout total to 47 in her 38.1 innings pitched.
UWA spotted Ford a pair of runs in the first with a pair of singles from Anna Shartzer and Jessica Powell and a key two-out double by Angela Smith. Powell paced the Tiger lineup in the double-dip 4-for-7 and three RBI. The Tigers added three runs each in the fourth and fifth to close out the game in five innings. Angela Hannah's double highlighted the fourth inning as she pushed Meagan Sloke across the plate after Sloke connected on a base hit earlier in the frame.
In the fifth, junior Valisha Fincher belted her second triple of day and third in the last three games, scoring Powell. Kelli Hartley added an RBI in the frame to complete the scoring.
In the opener, UWA scratched three runs on the board in the fourth to break the scoreless contest. Stephanie Beahn led off the frame with a double down the right field line and took third on a Miles miscue. Beahn scored on a MC pass ball for the first run of the game. After back-to-back singles by Powell and Sloke, the duo was plated on Kelli Hartley's two-out double to the left center gap. UWA added a run in the fifth as Powell drove in Shartzer, who led off the inning with a single up the middle.
Hannah Billingsley picked up the win after turning in four complete innings. The Barton College-transfer pitched around trouble in the first, allowing two of her three hits in the frame. The Golden Bears' threat was halted after MC's Tiffany Roberts flied into a double play. Jessica Cervantes pitched the final three innings and gave up MC's lone run in the sixth.
The Tigers return to the UWA Softball Complex this weekend, hosting the UWA Invitational.
