LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team returns to the UWA Softball Complex on Saturday, Feb. 27, hosting the annual UWA Invitational. The two-day event gets underway at 1 p.m. as the Tigers take on Spring Hill College.
The Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan round out the three-team field and will face Spring Hill at 5:30 p.m. SHC and UWA will tangle at 3 p.m. All games involving UWA will be available via live stats at www.uwaathletics.com.
The Tigers moved to 9-3 on the season with a Tuesday road sweep at Miles College and will look to keep their spotless home record intact. Both KWC and SHC enter the weekend looking for their first win of the season. Freshman Anna Shartzer leads UWA at the plate with a .471 average. The Gulf Shores, Ala-native is currently riding a six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 11 of the 12 games. Junior Valisha Fincher ranks second on the club in hits with ten, six for extra bases. In the first 12 games, UWA has been aggressive on the base paths as it has swiped 28 bases thus far on the season.
In the circle, junior Katie Ford is a perfect 6-0 on the season after nearly tossing a no-hitter in UWA's 8-0 shutout of Miles. Ford allowed a lead off single in the fifth to spoil the feat. The Garden City, Kan.-native has fanned 47 batters in her 38.1 innings pitched. Opposing batters are hitting just .165 against her. Senior Jessica Cervantes has recorded three saves in eight appearances in the circle.
UWA and KWC will tangle in a 1 p.m. doubleheader to close out the weekend.
