LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team opens its 2010 Gulf South Conference East Division schedule on Saturday, March 13, travelling to Florence, Ala. to face in-state nemesis North Alabama. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
UWA lost a pair of doubleheaders due to heavy rains that soaked the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Red and White were scheduled to host Tuskegee on Tuesday before taking on Stillman in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Wednesday. The Tigers have been idle since last weekend's appearance in the West Georgia Wolves Invitational. At the UWG event, UWA toppled a pair of ranked foes in Augusta State and Nova Southeastern along with handing newly-ranked Rollins College its first loss of the season.
After 22 games, UWA is hitting .292 as a team and has driven in 124 runs. The Tigers have posted 162 hits, including 65 extra base hits. UWA has been aggressive on the base paths with stout 45-of-49 stolen bases thus far on the season. In the circle, Junior Katie Ford pushed her season's mark to a perfect 13-0 with four wins under her belt this past weekend, earning the wins against NSU, RC and GSW. She now owns the school mark for consecutive wins.
UNA enters the opening weekend of conference play with an 11-13 overall mark after going 3-3 last weekend in Carrollton, Ga. The Tigers have claimed three out of the last four contests against the Lions after ending a 20-game losing skid to the Purple and Gold.
Following Saturday's GSC twinbill, the trip moves to the state of Tennessee as UWA will take on NAIA foe Lambuth University on Sunday, March 14. The final leg of the trip will be a meeting with GSC West foe Christian Brothers on Monday, March 15.
