Tiger Softball Drops A Pair of One-Run Contests At CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn.The University of West Alabama softball team dropped a doubleheader to Gulf South Conference West Division foe Christian Brothers on Monday as CBU edged UWA 2-1 in the first game and turned back the Tigers 6-5 in extra innings in the night cap.

 

The pair of setbacks drops UWA to 20-8 overall on the season.  CBU moved to 8-8 on the season with the two one-run contests.

 

UWA extended the second game in its last plate appearance as it erased a 5-1 deficit with a four-run seventh.  The Red and White tied the game with a pair of unearned runs on a pass ball.  Jessica Powell crossed the plate first before Mary Wright followed her after a muffed throw by the pitcher.  Anna Shartzer, Stephanie Beahn and Lauren Mills all collected hits in the frame to spark the comeback.

 

Playing with the international tie-breaker rule, CBU scored the game-winning run in its half of the eighth.  Alyse Brewer's single to centerfield proved to be the difference in the game as she drove in Lauren Dorsett, who started the inning at second base.

 

The Tigers took the early lead with a run in the first inning.  Mills drilled a double to right center, plating Beahn, who reached with a single.  After the first, CBU pitcher Michelle McEachron quieted UWA until the seventh. Kaylea Brewer's double in the second plated a pair of runs to take the lead.  CBU extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth with another two spot.

 

Senior Jessica Cervantes was tagged with the loss after taking over pitching duties for Hannah Billingsley in the sixth.  Hannah Griffin started her second game of the season and allowed three runs on four hits along with a pair of strikeouts. 

 

In game one, the Buccaneers broke a 1-1 deadlock in the sixth inning and used solid pitching to stall the Tigers.  Anna Kramer led off the sixth with a double and was plated on Dorsett's single.  UWA had the tying run at third with two down in the seventh, but McEachron fanned Hartley to close out the game. After CBU scratched the scoreboard with a run n the first, the Tigers tied the contest on a Shartzer RBI in the third.  UWA out-hit the Bucs 7-5, but left eight runners stranded on the bases.

 

UWA's Katie Ford (13-2) was saddled with her second loss of the season after finishing the last three frames on the affair.

 

UWA continues its road trip on Saturday, March 20, trekking to Valdosta, Ga. to face the Blazers of Valdosta State.  First pitch is set for Noon CST.  The Tigers will close out the weekend with a Sunday DH at West Florida.
