PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Alabama softball team dropped a Gulf South Conference doubleheader to East rival West Florida in a pair of slugfests. UWF claimed the opener 16-7 and came from behind to win the second game, 11-10.
The two setbacks drop UWA to 21-11 overall and 2-4 in GSC play. The fifteenth ranked Argonauts improved to 25-4 on the season and 6-2 in the conference.
UWA tied a season-high in hits with 14 in the second game, but squandered a 10-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh. UWF took advantage of four Tiger errors in the seventh along with three hits for the come-from-behind win. UWA broke a 4-4 deadlock in the fifth with a three-run inning and added a pair of runs in the sixth. The final UWA run came in the seventh on a home run from Angela Hanna. Stephanie Beahn led off the fifth with a solo shot down the left field line to jumpstart the inning. After a walk by Kelli Hartley and a single by Jessica Powell, pinch hitter Mary Wright singled to left center to plate both Hartley and Powell. Hartley drove in a two runs with a single in the sixth.
After UWF erased a 4-0 UWA lead off of starter Katie Ford, the junior from Garden City, Kan. settled down to allow just one run in the fifth and tossed a 1-2-3 sixth. After walking the lead off batter in the seventh, she was relived by senior Jessica Cervantes, who suffered the loss in the contest. Ford fanned seven in the circle, but was hampered by eight walks.
Senior Lauren Mills' two-run home run highlighted UWA's three-run first inning.
In the opener, UWF scored in all but one inning and posted 13 of its 16 runs in the final three at bats. After being down 7-1 in the heading into the fifth, the Tigers put together a five-run fifth to trim the deficit to 7-6 with an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the inning. The Argos extended the lead to 9-7 before the Tigers pushed across a run in the sixth on a home run from Hartley. UWF exploded for seven runs in the sixth to close out the game. A pair of two run singles from Meagan Sloke and Angela Smith highlighted UWA's fifth inning. Hartley led all Tigers at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing.
UWA returns to action on Tuesday, March 23, travelling to Jackson, Miss. to face Millsaps College.
