CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Alabama softball team turned in a sweep on Saturday at the West Georgia-hosted Wolves Invitational as UWA upended No. 14 Nova Southeastern 11-6 and turning back Georgia Southwestern 7-2 in the second game of the day.
UWA (16-4) notched its second-straight win over a ranked foe as it knocked off No. 19 Augusta State on Friday evening. The Red and White now have three wins on the season against ranked opposition.
Against NSU, the Tigers broke open a 5-5 deadlock in the fifth on Valisha Fincher's second two-run home run of the contest. UWA led off the game with two runs in the first and overcame a 3-2 deficit with a three-run fourth. The Tiger bats came alive in the last four plate appearances as they scored nine of the 11 runs in those four at bats. Kelli Hartley paced the line up with a 3-for-4 outing, including a pair of doubles in the affair. Jessica Powell launched her first home run of the season with a three-run blast in the fourth. Anna Shartzer turned in a pair of hits and scored twice.
The 11 runs scored by UWA were the most the Sharks (16-6) have given up this season. NSU out-hit the Tigers 9-7.
Junior Katie Ford picked up her first of two wins on the day after tossing three complete innings in relief. Ford allowed three hits and logged a strikeout. The Garden City, Kan.-native moved to 12-0 on the season with a win over Georgia Southwestern. In the GSW tilt, she pitched the first four innings and gave up a run on four hits. Ford fanned five Hurricanes in the outing. With her two wins on Saturday, Ford now holds UWA's record for consecutive wins in a season. Former Tiger hurler Christian Chaney strung together ten straight wins in 2003.
In the GSW duel, UWA jumped on the board in its first plate appearance before the Hurricanes evened the contest in the third. The Tigers produced a pair of runs in the nest three frames to break open the contest. GSW added a run in seventh for the final tally. Leading 5-1 after four innings, Lindsey Skinner extended UWA's lead with a two-run blast in the fifth. Skinner finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a single and her second round-tripper of the season. Shartzer added a pair of hits to push her season's total to a team-leading 27 hits.
The Tigers begin the final day of the event bright and early with an 8 a.m. CST contest with Florida Southern. UWA closes out the weekend against Rollins at 2 p.m.
