UWA Tops CBU, HSU On Saturday At Crossover

DECATUR, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team won both games on Saturday at the Gulf South Conference Crossover in come-from-behind-fashion. UWA claimed a 5-4 decision over Christian Brothers before topping Henderson State, 4-3, in eight innings.

With the two wins, the Tigers move to 31-19 on the season and 8-11 in GSC play.  With North Alabama splitting its two games, UWA and UNA are now tied for fourth in the GSC East.

In the CBU affair, The Tigers entered the seventh down 4-2.  After back-to-back singles to start the inning by Angela Hanna and Kelli Hartley and a wild pitch, a fly ball from Jessica Powell plated Hanna to bring UWA within a run.  After a Meagan Sloke walk and a Buccaneer fielding error to load the bases, Caitlyn Bonham's bloop single over the first base bag scored the tying and game-winning run.  Bonham drove in three of UWA's five runs. UWA scratched the scoreboard with an unearned run in the second before CBU scored solo runs in the third and fourth to take the lead.  After UWA trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the sixth, CBU added a run in its half of the seventh.

Katie Ford moved to 21-6 on the season after tossing the final two frames.  Hannah Griffin started the contest and went the first four innings.  Ford carried the momentum into her start in the circle against HSU as the Garden City-junior turned in six solid scoreless innings.  The Lady Reddies touched Ford for seven hits, but did not allow a run.  UWA staked Ford with a one-run lead in the second after it took advantage of a pair of HSU miscues to score the first run of the game.  Senior Jessica Cervantes looked to notch her eighth save of the season in the seventh, but HSU put together a three-run inning to take a 3-1 lead.

In similar fashion to the day's opener, UWA needed a pair of runs to even the game and three to win it.  After two outs, Lindsey Skinner and Anna Shartzer started the rally with base hits.  Stephanie Beahn connected on her second double of the contest to plate Skinner.  Shartzer scored on a pass ball to send the game into extra innings.

After Cervantes pitched around a double in the HSU eighth, Powell started the eighth with single.  Hanna reached base after HSU botched a sacrifice bunt.  Sloke pushed the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.  Senior Lauren Mills laid down a perfect squeeze bunt play to push across the winning run.

Cervantes picked up her first win of the season after tossing the final two innings.

UWA closes out the GSC Crossover on Sunday against Ouachita Baptist at 10 a.m. before facing Arkansas Tech at Noon.  Both games will be available through live stats at www.uwaathletics.com.
