LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The final weekend of the Gulf South Conference softball season has been altered due to the impending weather system that will sweep through the region on Saturday. The University of West Alabama softball team will face nationally-ranked UAH on Sunday, April 25 and close out the regular season on Monday, Apr; 26 at West Georgia.
The Tigers and Chargers will get underway at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Huntsville. The UWA-UWG twinbill is set for 1 p.m. CST. Live stats will be available for the UAH set at www.uwaathletics.com.
Post season implications are on the line this weekend as UWA and North Alabama are vying for the last GSC Tournament spot. Both clubs enter the weekend with identical 10-13 conference records. The Tigers need to finish one game better than the Lions, due to them currently holding the tie breaker. UNA will now square off with UWG on Sunday and UAH on Monday. The GSC Tournament will commence on Friday, April 30 in Southaven, Miss. UWA will be looking for the season sweep over the Wolves as it took the DH in Livingston on March 27. UAH exited the UWA campus on March 28 with a pair of wins.
UWA (38-21) is coming off a midweek split with Millsaps College to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Red and White claimed game one 8-2, before falling in the night cap 7-3. With the win over MC, the Tigers put together a 28-8 non-conference mark in 2010.
UWA maintained its .300 batting average after Tuesday's contests. Individually, senior Angela Hanna and freshman Anna Shartzer rank as the top two hitters on the squad. Hanna leads the team in home runs with ten and has driven in 31 runs. Shartzer, who has been in the starting line up for 58 straight games, has turned in a team-high 70 hits, including 16 extra base hits. Jessica Powell leads the team with 39 RBI. In the circle, junior Katie Ford has racked up 25 wins this season and has appeared in 42 games. Ford ranks second in the league in strikeouts and needs one more to reach the 200 strikeout plateau this season. The Garden City, Kan.-native has tossed eight complete games and recorded five shut outs.
