LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team will take part in the annual Gulf South Conference Crossover this weekend in Decatur, Ala. UWA will begin the four-day event on Thursday against Delta State at 4 p.m. at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 28-16 overall mark and 5-9 in GSC contests. All games this weekend will count in the league standings.
UWA is coming off a season-long 12-game homestand in which it posted a 7-5 mark. Over the 12-game span, the Red and White hit .311 and averaged five runs per contest. Freshman Anna Shartzer paced the Tiger bats with 15 hits, including a trio of doubles. Senior catcher Angela Hannah sported a .412 batting average along with three home runs. On the season, UWA is batting slightly under .300 (.295) and ranks as one of the top teams in the GSC in extra base hits. The Tigers rank second in the GSC in doubles (73) and triples (8). The squad has 34 home runs on the season, ranking them fifth in the conference.
The Tigers are listed in the top 40 in two NCAA Division II statistical categories through the month of March. UWA ranks 31st in the nation in stolen bases per game (1.73) and 37th in doubles per contest (1.66). Individually, senior pitcher Jessica Cervantes is second in the nation in saves with seven on the season. Junior pitcher Katie Ford ranks fifth in wins and 20th in strikeouts.
Following Thursday's crossover lid lifter with the Lady Statesmen, UWA will face nationally-ranked Arkansas at Monticello (37-6) at Noon on Friday before closing out the day against Southern Arkansas (9-22) at 4 p.m. Saturday's action will pit the Red and White against Christian Brothers (14-20) at 2 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. contest with Henderson State (20-17). UWA closes out the weekend on Sunday with Ouachita Baptist (31-15) and Arkansas Tech (18-16).
