LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Setting a record for best start in program history, the West Alabama women's basketball team erased a large deficit and defeated visiting West Florida at Pruitt Hall Thursday night. The win is UWA's 10th in a row and pushes its record to 14-2 (2-0 Gulf South Conference). The Argos fall to 7-10 (0-3 GSC).
The Tigers – who were just on the outside of the latest ESPN USA Today Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll – surpassed the 13-2 mark that was previously set by the 2001-02 squad.
The historical win did not come easily for the Red and White as the team struggled in the opening stanza, shooting just 30.0 percent from the field while allowing the Argos to connect on 51.9 percent of their shots.
While the Tigers did enjoy a brief 4-2 lead in the game's opening moments, that advantage evaporated and the game would be tilted towards UWF for the rest of the first half as the Argos built up as much as a 17-point cushion.
The two teams went into the locker room at the break with UWF leading 40-27.
A 9-0 run out of the gates to start the second half ignited the comeback for UWA, and the hosts continued to chip away through the first half of the second stanza.
With the Argos on top 45-40, Mystee Dale sank a jumper to pull her side within two at the 14:30 mark of the period. Two and a half minutes later,
Larrenda Rockwell picked the pocket of Victoria Cecil to setup Dale's lone 3-pointer of the night, knotting the game up for the first time since the 17:30 mark of the first half.
West Florida regained the lead briefly, but four consecutive points from Rockwell pushed the game in UWA's favor for the first time with 10:10 remaining in the contest.
The next eight minutes became quite a see-saw, but with West Florida up by a single point with 1:48 left, Dale proceeded to score the next five points to put the Tigers up 62-59. Indeed, she scored seven of the game's final 10 points to ensure the monumental triumph.
The late surge gave Dale a game-best 24 points in the contest, while teammates LaShandra McCoy and
Latashia Greer also reached double figures. McCoy concluded the night with 14 points, and Greer chipped in 12.
Greer also led the game in rebounding, collecting 12 to record a double-double. Her 12 boards helped allow the Tigers to enjoy a 44-34 advantage over the visitors on the glass.
West Florida's hot first half from the floor gave it a slight advantage on the night as the Argos outshot UWA by a 39.3 percent to 36.8 percent margin.
The Tigers will return to the floor Saturday night in Huntsville with tip against UAH scheduled for 5 p.m. The contest can be heard on ESPN 104.9 and at www.uwaathletics.com.
