LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Winning its seventh straight game, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team defeated visiting Montevallo 70-62 on Monday afternoon at Pruitt Hall. The win improves UWA's record to 11-2 on the season while the Falcons fall to 4-6.
The current streak of victories is tied for the fourth longest in program history, and it is the greatest run since the 2001-02 squad strung together nine consecutive wins.
The victory did not come easily for the Tigers as West Alabama would have to overcome its first halftime deficit of the season. A pair of
Dakota Powell 3-pointers gave the hosts a four-point advantage at both the 15:59 and 11:43 marks of the opening stanza, but a scoring drought of nearly six minutes allowed the Falcons to pull ahead by a 26-18 score with 4:38 remaining in the period.
Scoring the next six points, the Red and White cut into the UM lead, and the teams traded baskets down the stretch to go into the locker room with Montevallo up 30-27.
The Tigers would not be daunted by trailing, and the squad scored the first six points of the second stanza to tilt the contest back in its favor. The UWA advantage ballooned all the way out to 12 as a 19-5 run over just more than seven minutes produced a 47-35 score.
Behind the strength of a strong second half from Mystee Dale, West Alabama would build up as much as a 15-point cushion in the half as the four-time reigning conference player of the week scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the period. The Laurel, Miss. native matched a team-high with eight rebounds while also dishing out a team-best four assists.
The Falcons would mount a late charge but would never pull closer than within five points down the stretch.
Joining Dale in double figures on the night were
Latashia Greer and Powell who each recorded 12 points. Powell did so on the strength of a 4-8 performance from beyond the arc, and she has recorded four long-range shots in two of the past three contests.
LaShandra McCoy matched Dale with eight of UWA's 41 boards.
The Tigers held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding the visitors 41-39, while the team also was better from the field on the day. West Alabama shot at a 40.4 percent clip, and the Falcons connected on 36.7 percent of their attempts.
West Alabama returns to action on Thursday evening as the team travels to Miles for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
