VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 3-2 decision to Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon. UWA falls to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in the Gulf South Conference. VSU improves to 11-4 and 5-1 in the conference.
After a 2-2 contest at the half, Leanne Bishop's third goal of the game lifted the Red and Black to the victory. The game-winner came in the 66th minute of play off a corner from Blakely McClellan.
The Tigers attempted seven shots in the contest with all coming on goal while VSU fired off 19 shots and tied the Red and White's mark of seven on goal.
Jet Amerg gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute off an assist from
Vicky Petrova. The goal was the third of the season for Amerg and gave Petrova her team-best eighth assist.
After VSU tied the contest at 1-all in the 33rd minute on a Leanne Bishop goal,
Nicki Gears placed the Red and White back in front at the 44:04 mark of the first half on an assist from
Thais Hollerbach. Gears' goal gives her a team-best seven on the campaign while Hollerback recorded her first assist of the season.
However, the Blazers quickly tied the contest up at 2-2 on Bishop's second goal of the contest - sending the teams into the locker room even at the first 45 minutes of play.
Jess Martin (6-10) tallied four saves in the outing with three coming in the opening half of play as the Blazers attempted 15 shots during the frame. The Red and White held VSU to just four attempts in the second half.
Olivia Mills (11-3) tallied five saves for the win in net as the Tigers recorded just two shots in the final 45 minutes.
West Alabama closes out conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when the Tigers travel to West Georgia. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
