No. 23 Tigers Look to Red Out No. 5 North Alabama in GSC Game of the Week

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The No. 23 West Alabama football team seeks its second Gulf South Conference win as the Tigers look to Red Out in-state foe and No. 5 North Alabama on Thursday, Oct. 27 in the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The game airs live on CSS, Mediacom, ESPN-3, TV-24 and WHCQ and on tape delay at 11 p.m. central on CoxSportsTV and on Saturday afternoon on the Alabama Cable Network (ACN).

The first 500 students will receive a red, UWA shirt and Tiger towels and thunder sticks will also be passed out to students.

UWA (6-2, 1-1 GSC) picked up its first conference win last weekend in a 35-23 decision at West Georgia. In the victory over the Wolves, junior Matt Willis rushed for 127 yards and became the fastest Tiger running back to 1,000 yards and just the second all-time to reach the milestone. Freshman Kyle Caldwell also tossed a career-high 206 yards in the win. The Tigers, which snapped an eight-game losing streak to UWG, amassed 405 yards of total offense in the contest – marking the third straight outing with 400-plus yards for the Red and White and the fourth time season. The victory also gave the Red and White its first back-to-back triumphs over the Wolves since the 1990 and 1991 campaigns.

UNA (6-1, 0-1 GSC) enters the contest looking to rebound one week after losing its conference opener to Delta State in overtime. After holding a 10-point advantage in the fourth quarter, the Lions had critical breakdowns that allowed DSU to rally for the win.

Thursday's matchup also features a unique aspect as UWA head coach Will Hall will stand across the sideline from his alma mater for the first time as a head coach. Hall was the 2003 Harlon Hill Trophy winner at UNA and led the squad to a 13-1 record and to the semifinals of the Division II playoffs.

The Lions have got the best of series holding a 47-15-1 record. However, the two squads have split the series in the last four meetings in Livingston. The Tigers claimed wins in 2002 (31-24) and 2003 (28-27), but have dropped the last two outings inside Tiger Stadium 2006 (45-3) and 2008 (41-9). Last season, the Tigers held a 23-3 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lions erased the 21-point margin to claim a 24-23. Prior to that, the Red and White upset the Lions 31-28 in Florence in 2009.

Willis continues to pace the UWA offense. The Collins, Miss., native leads the squad with 1,025 yards and a team-best eight touchdowns. Willis stands ninth nationally in rushing with 128.12 yards per game and 29th in all-purpose yards with 145.25. Caldwell has thrown for a team-high 779 yards following his 200-plus yard effort at UWG last week. The signal caller, which ranks 21st in passing efficiency, has also tossed nine TDs and rushed for one on the campaign. Defensively, the Red and White have three players with 40 or more tackles. Deon Lacey, who leads the squad in tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (4.0), paces the unit with 68 total tackles. Gabe Poe, who led the team last season, stands second on the team with 48 stops with Shontral Ford just behind with 46 tackles. With four interceptions on the season, Otha Foster is 12th in the nation.

Quarterback Lee Chapple leads the UNA offense with 1,931 passing yards and 14 scores. Wideouts Mo Miliam and Tristan Purifoy have developed as Chapple's top targets. The duo has combined for 76 receptions and 10 TDs. Defensively, UNA has allowed 395.9 yards per game, but has held its opponents to 17.4 points per game.
