UWA Hoops Falls in Home Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team opened its 2011-12 home slate with a narrow 64-63 setback to Talladega College. The stumble sends UWA to 1-2 on the season while TC improved to 4-2.

Brittany Weathers posted the first double-double of the season with a team-best 16 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Nikka Jordan and Jamie Gunter each tallied double digits with 15 and 12 respectively.

The Tigers shot 39-percent from the field and connecting on only 56-percent of its shots from the charity stripe. TC hit 41-percent of its shots from the floor, including a blistering 65-percent in the second half.

The Tornadoes, which led 28-27 at the half, extended their margin to 38-31 at the 15-minute mark of the second half on a Shakila Cole jumper. The seven-point lead was the largest of the game for TC. The Red and Blue held its advantage until the 8-minute mark when a pair of Jamie Gunter free-throws put the Red and White in front for the first time since TC took the lead with 26 seconds remaining in the opening half.

The two squads exchanged leads over the waning minutes of the final half until again the Tornadoes hit a shot to take the lead with less than minute remaining in the contest. Ebony Richardson, who was one of three double digit scores in the game for the Red and Blue, hit the front end of a pair of free-throws. After the missing the second attempt, Richardson gathered the ball and was again sent to the line to increase the deficit, but failed to connect on the front end of 1-and-1.

After both teams alternated turnovers, the Red and White had one final attempt at taking the lead at the buzzer, but Weathers floater would not fall as time expired.

Lynice Schallberger and Bianca Thomas each scored 15 points to lead the Tornadoes on the evening. Thomas also grabbed a team-best 14 boards while Megan Llof added 10 rebounds.

West Alabama returns to action on Friday, Nov. 18 as the Tigers travel to Pensacola, Fla., for a two-day tournament at West Florida. UWA opens with Georgia Southwestern at 4 p.m. and closes out the two-day event on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Montevallo at 4 p.m.
