VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team moved its season-long win streak to three games following a 60-54 win over Columbus State on the final day of the Valdosta State hosted Days Inn Classic. UWA improved to 4-6 on the season while CSU falls to 5-4.
The Tiger bench played a significant role in the victory as
Tamya Thompson led the group with 12 points. As a whole, the UWA reserves outscored CSU 22-8. Thompson, a native of Decatur, Ala., was one of three Tigers in double figures.
Brittany Weathers posted her fifth double-double of the season and second straight with a team-leading 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Synthea Reed tied the Hattiesburg, Miss., native for the top spot on the squad in boards in the triumph. Nikka Jordan added 10 points to round out the double digit scorers, all coming in the second 20 minutes of action.
After CSU held an early advantage over the first five minutes of play, the Tigers knotted the game at 9-all on a Thompson jumper with just less than 14 minutes in the first half. The two squads exchanged leads over the following 9 minutes before the Red and White took a 20-19 lead on a
Kenyatta Epps three-pointer. The Yazoo City, Miss., native's trey placed UWA in front the remainder of the game.
The Tigers ran out to as much an 8-point margin, its largest of the game, over the opening minutes of the second half. The Red and White held its largest lead twice during the half.
Dominique Gilbert led all Cougar scorers with 23 points and also hauled in 10 rebounds.
West Alabama breaks for the holidays before returning to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 31 at Montevallo. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. The non-conference contest at UM marks the final one of the season as the Tigers open conference play on Thursday, Jan. 5 as UWA hosts Alabama-Huntsville.
