DECATUR, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team ran its win streak to five games with a pair of extra inning victories on Saturday afternoon in the UAH Charger Chillout. The Tigers (7-1) started the day with a 5-1, nine-inning win over Quincy and followed it with a12-9 victory over Ohio Dominican in eight innings.
The international softball tiebreaker rule helped provide the first run of the game for the Tigers.
Taylor Beck was placed on second base and then pinch ran for by
Caitlyn Bonham to start the eighth inning.
Valisha Fincher led the inning off with a single through the left side to move Bonham over to third base. Bonham became the first run of the affair as she scored on a
Jessica Powell ground out to second base.
QU answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game and send it to the ninth inning.
Meagan Sloke was placed on second and moved to third as
Stephanie Beahn reached on an error by the short stop.
Nicole Bailey followed with a single through the left side to load the bases.
Angela Smith then drove a ball back up the middle to score Sloke and Beahn and move Bailey to third. Smith advanced to second to place a pair of Tigers into scoring position with no outs. Later, Bailey scored on an error by the second baseman which allowed
Anna Shartzer to reach first and Smith to move to third. Smith became the final run of the contest as she scored on a passed ball.
Kristen Skinner (2-0) pitched all nine innings for the Red and White in the win. Skinner allowed five hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in the effort.
In the second game of the day, UWA held a 5-3 lead through five innings after the Tigers plated all five runs in the third inning. The two teams each added a run in the sixth to give the Red and White a 6-4 lead heading into the final frame. After UWA went scoreless in the seventh, ODU added a pair of runs to send the contest into extra frames – all knotted at six runs.
The Tigers doubled up their run total in the game with six runs in the eighth to take a 12-6 lead. After
Rebecca Schick was placed on second base to start the inning with the tiebreaker rule and Bailey walked, Fincher drew an intentional walk to load the bases. One batter later, Powell cleared the base runners with a double to center field – putting UWA up 9-6.
The Red and White loaded the bases again as Sloke singled up the middle following an error that saw
Kelli Hartley reach base. Beahn then followed with a two-out, single up the middle to score Hartley and Powell. The Tigers again loaded the bases with a single by
Madison Fuller. Smith then drew a walk to push the final UWA run across the plate.
ODU attempted a rally in the home half of the eighth, but only managed three runs.
Katie Ford (5-0) pitched seven innings in the win - allowing seven runs on nine hits. Ford walked eight and fanned five in the contest.
Taylor Tucker (2) collected the save with an inning pitched and two strikeouts.
West Alabama closes out the Chillout beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow against Northern Kentucky. The final contest of the weekend is scheduled for 3 p.m. against Indianapolis.
