Tigers Split in Final Day of Charger Chillout

DECATUR, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team split in the final day of UAH Charger Chillout as the UWA (8-2) claimed a 2-0 victory over Northern Kentucky to open the day and finished with a 7-1 loss to Indianapolis.

A pitching duel through five innings in the opening contest, UWA finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out, Jessica Powell homerun to left field. The Tigers added another run one batter later as Ashley Frost singled to right center. Following an Anna Shartzer walk, Stephanie Beahn singled to center field to plate Frost.

Kristen Skinner (3-0) pitched a masterful, seven innings in the win. Skinner sat down eight Norse batters in the contest while allowing just five hits.

In the final game of the Chillout, the Tigers ran into a strong hitting Indy squad. The Greyhounds – who tallied 10 hits in the win - posted six runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.

After UI placed the first run on the board, Krysta Bradford doubled through the left side to score Che' Hanebrink and Jessica Breeden. The Greyhounds added three more to take the early lead in the outing.

The Red and White tacked its first run to the board in the fifth inning. Beahn led off the inning with a double to shallow left field and later moved to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Shartzer singled to up the middle to score.

UI posted another run in the bottom of the frame to regain the six-run lead as DeVyn Barker singled up the middle to score Kelsey Rummel.

Katie Ford (4-1) took the loss with four innings pitched. Ford allowed six runs on seven hits in her first loss of the season while walking seven and striking out three. Taylor Tucker pitched two innings in relief while surrendering a run on three hits along with a walk.
