LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Strengthening its chances to make the Gulf South Conference Tournament, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team defeated visiting West Georgia by a 59-54 score on Thursday night inside Pruitt Hall. UWA now sits at 18-7 (6-5 GSC) while the Wolves drop to 8-17 (5-6 GSC).
While West Georgia is bumped out of the tournament picture for now, the Tigers remain in a three-way tie – except it is now a deadlock at the second position.
Valdosta State, Alabama in Huntsville and the Tigers are now all tied for the ever-important second seed in the upcoming GSC tournament with one game to go. The Blazers of VSU visit Livingston on Saturday, while UAH takes on East Division champ North Alabama.
A win on Saturday would put the Tigers into the tournament with seeding being the only remaining question. UWA would also make the field if it loses, UAH loses and West Georgia wins or if the Tigers fall, UAH wins and West Georgia wins.
In Thursday's night victory – a win that gives UWA a season sweep of the Wolves – Mystee Dale led the way for the Tigers. The nation's second-leading scorer was the only West Alabama player in double figures as she scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. For good measure, the Laurel, Miss., native added four assists, two steals and one block.
The Red and White won the contest despite being outshot by West Georgia by a 32.8 percent to 30.0 percent margin, but with a 49-40 advantage on the glass, the Tigers did outrebound the guests.
Monica Jones led UWG with 19 points.
Tip-off for Saturday's regular season finale against Valdosta is slated for 2 p.m.
