LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team improved to 10-2 on the season with a pair of wins at Stillman on Saturday afternoon. UWA blasted SC 11-1 in the first game of the doubleheader before claiming a 5-1 victory in the second game.
The Tigers and Stillman will square off in another doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 27 as UWA opens its home slate. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
In the opening game, UWA used a seven-run, second inning to blast the Purple and Gold. The Tigers totaled 14 hits in the winning effort including a grand slam by
Nicole Bailey – her first of the campaign.
Anna Shartzer drove in the first run of the inning to put the Tigers up 2-0. Bailey then lifted the ball over the left field fence to open the lead to 6-0. UWA would add two more runs in the frame to take a commanding 8-0 lead before tallying its final three runs of the affair in the fifth inning.
Kristen Skinner (4-0) logged four innings in the circle to pick up the win. Skinner recorded two strikeouts in the victory while allowing just one hit and the lone SC run.
Taylor Tucker garnered one inning in relief.
In the second game of the double dip, the Tigers tallied five runs on 10 hits. The Red and White posted two runs in its first trip to the plate.
Rebecca Schick doubled to left field to score Shartzer – who led the contest off with a double.
Kelli Hartley became the Tigers second run of the frame as she scored on a passed ball.
Schick again drove in the first run of the inning – this time in the top of third – as she doubled to left to score Shartzer for the second time in the outing. Schick and Hartley each scored later in the frame to cap the Tigers five runs in the affair.
Katie Ford (6-1) earned the win on the rubber with four innings tossed. Ford fanned six in the effort while not allowing a hit.
Hannah Griffin picked up her first save of the season with three innings in the circle.
Following Sunday's doubleheader, West Alabama hosts Miles College on Monday, Feb. 28 First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
