Tigers Post a Pair of Shutouts in 2011 Home Debut

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team opened the 2011 home slate with a pair of five-inning, blankings of Stillman. UWA (12-2) used a 13-run, fourth inning to win 16-0 in the opening game and followed with a 9-0 victory in the second game.

The Tigers hit a total of three homeruns in the two outings. Caitlyn Bonham hit the first homer of the day – a grand slam - in the opening contest to cap the 13-run inning for the Tigers. The Springville, Ala., native finished the contest as one of seven Tigers with multi hits and posted a team-leading five RBI.

Anna Shartzer and Rebecca Schick each left the yard in the second game of the doubleheader. Shartzer finished the day perfect at the dish with 6-for-6 effort with two RBI and two runs scored. Schick followed right behind Shartzer with a 5-for-6 day at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.

In game one, UWA pounded out 20 hits en route to the shutout win. Valisha Fincher added three hits with Nicole Bailey and Kelli Hartley rounding out the multiple hit producers for the Tigers. Bailey along with Ashley Frost and Taylor Beck each garnered multi-RBI efforts.

Kristen Skinner (5-0) tossed four innings in the circle for the win. Skinner sat down six SC batters while scattering four hits. Taylor Tucker fanned three batters in a one inning, relief effort.

In the second game of the twinbill, the Tigers registered all nine runs in the first three frames. UWA took a 2-0 lead in its first at-bat. Shartzer and Schick's two-RBI, homers in the second inning widened the Red and White lead to 6-0 through two full innings.

Schick continued her perfect game at the plate with a RBI single to plate Meagan Sloke as the first of three runs in the third inning. Taylor Miller followed with a double to score Schick and Madison Fuller to conclude the runs for the Tigers.

Katie Ford (7-1) struck out five, walked one and scattered two hits in four innings of work in the circle to secure the win. Hannah Griffin came on for the final inning of action.

West Alabama continues its homestand with a doubleheader against Miles College on Monday, Feb. 28. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaalthietics.com.
