Tigers Sweep Doubleheader from Miles

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A leadoff homerun in the fifth inning of game two secures a pair of five-inning wins over Miles College for the University of West Alabama softball team. UWA (14-2) blasted the Golden Bears 16-1 in the opening game and a claimed the second game 8-0 on Jessica Powell homer.

After plating one in their first at-bat, the Tigers used a six-run, second inning to widen the margin against MC (2-10). Nicole Bailey plated the majority of the runs in the frame with a three-run homer over the left field wall – scoring Anna Shartzer and Angela Smith. Shartzer scored the first run of the inning with a RBI, single that pushed Taylor Miller across the dish.

A pair of walks and an error following Bailey's homer loaded the bases for the Tigers. Rebecca Schick then drew a walk to plate the fifth run of the inning. It marked the second time in the game that Schick recorded a RBI in the game. Miller scored the final run of the inning with a single that scored Kelli Hartley.

Hannah Griffin (1-1) struck out six and walked one en route to claiming her first victory of the season with three innings pitched in the circle. Katie Ford stepped in with two innings in relief as she fanned three. The duo combined for a no-hitter in the victory.

In the opening game, UWA cranked out 13 runs in the first two innings to take a commanding lead. The Tigers added three more in the fourth after Miles scored its first run in the top of the frame.

West Alabama loaded the bases on three consecutive singles to start to the game and Powell drove in the first two runs with a double to right field to score Taylor Beck and Shartzer. Hartley then scored Powell and Valisha Fincher with a double of her own to extend the lead to 4-0.

One batter later, Meagan Sloke doubled to plate Hartley. Madison Fuller and Shartzer each added RBI doubles in the inning to score the next two runs. Schick opened the scoring in the second inning with a bases loaded, single that scored Powell and Fincher. Sloke, Fuller, Cailtlyn Bonham and Beck each drove in runs during the frame to extend the Tigers advantage.

Allison Lockhart recorded the final runs of the game on a three-run, homerun over left center.

Kristen Skinner (6-0) allowed just one hit and sat down three MC batters in three innings in the circle for the victory. Taylor Tucker tossed the final two innings – allowing the lone Golden Bear run on one hit with a strikeout.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 9 as the Tigers travel to Tuskegee. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
