LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama walked off with a thrilling 7-6 victory on Wednesday night at Tartt Field, scoring four runs in the ninth to defeat visiting Montevallo. The Tigers improve to 13-8 on the season with the exciting win while the Falcons fall to 11-12.
UWA had six singles in the final frame – including four consecutive with two outs – to produce the four runs as Clint Brown drove in
Deon Williams with the winning hit.
Jay Jennings started things off for the Tigers in the ninth as he picked up his first hit of the night, and
Ladarrius Cole followed suit as he reached with his third in the contest.
Cole finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored.
Brian Simone grounded to first for the first out of the inning, but it was a productive one as it plated Jennings to start the scoring. Following another out, Colin McKeen singled down the left field line to score Cole, pulling the Red and White to within one at 6-5.
At that point
Coleman McClendon pinch ran for McKeen, and Williams singled into right to give UWA runners at first and third. That set up
Trent Johnson's game-tying RBI single that plated McClendon, marking the sixth time in eight pinch-running situations that the freshman has scored and also the third time his run has tied a ballgame.
Jesse Boyd (1-1) tossed the final out in the top half of the ninth and earned the victory for the Tigers.
The Tigers drew first blood early in the contest, as an RBI double by Kevin Deese plated Cole and a sacrifice fly by Williams scored Simone to give West Alabama a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The two-sport star Williams picked up his second RBI of the night in the fifth when he sacrificed again, scoring Cole to put the Tigers up 3-0.
The lead seemed much larger than it actually was as
Taylor Bratton was dominant in the early innings as the lefty held the Falcons through the first 3.2 innings, retiring 11 consecutive after hitting the leadoff batter with a pitch.
Bratton still had yet to give up a run – and just three hits – through six innings, but the visitors jumped on him in the seventh, scoring three runs to tie the contest and knock the Oakville, Ontario, native out of the game.
The Falcons added three more runs in the eighth, but it wound up not being enough on this night as Scottie Deason (0-1) picked up his first loss of the season in blowing the lead in the ninth.
The Tigers will take the upcoming weekend off and then return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 22 with a road game at William Carey before coming back home for a three-game set with Alabama in Huntsville starting on Saturday, Mar. 26.
