FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team dropped to 16-6 on the season with a pair of extra inning losses at North Alabama. The Tigers fell 8-7 in the first contest and 7-4 in the second game of the double dip. UNA improves to 7-11 on the season.
In the opening game, a three-run, eighth inning clinched the victory for the Lions. A Sarah Corn, 2-RBI single up the middle tied the contest at 7-all, but a Tiger throwing error allowed Ali Barnette to score from third on the play and secure the win.
UWA trailed 4-0 heading into its final at-bat. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out and plated their first run on an
Anna Shartzer single to left center that pushed
Allison Lockhart across the dish. One batter later,
Valisha Fincher cranked a grand slam to right field to give the Red and White its first lead of the game at 5-4. The homer was the 34th of the Tarrant, Ala., senior's career.
The Lions sent the contest into extra innings on a Julie Mercer single through the right side to score Barnette.
UWA regained the lead in the eighth on a Shartzer two-out, double to right center – scoring
Angela Smith and
Rebecca Schick – but Shartzer was erased sliding into third.
Kristen Skinner (8-2) took the loss with one inning in relief. The Toxey, Ala., junior allowed three runs on three hits with a walk.
In the nightcap of the twinbill, a Jennifer Sharp, three-run walk off homerun ended the contest.
After the Lions again pushed the first run across the board – scoring in the first inning, UWA loaded the bases in the fourth inning and consecutive walks by Fincher and
Jessica Powell gave the Tigers their first lead of the game at 2-1. The Purple and Gold knotted the game at 2-all in the bottom of the frame on a Lindsay Bobrowski single to left field that scored Heather Suddoth.
Schick and Fincher gave the Red and White a two-run advantage with solo homeruns heading into the bottom of the sixth. Schick led-off the fifth inning while Fincher's came with one down in the sixth. The Lions again tied the game up – this time on a two-run homer by Mercer.
Katie Ford (8-3) took the loss with 1.2 innings in relief. The Garden City, Kan., senior allowed two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
