Tigers Snap Streak with Sweep of Lambuth

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team snapped a four-game losing streak by mercy-ruling Lambuth 15-7 and 9-1 on Sunday afternoon. The wins improve UWA to 18-6 on the season while LU falls to 2-12-3.

Valisha Fincher launched two of the Tigers' four homeruns on the afternoon. The Tarrant, Ala., senior leads the team in homeruns with eight and is second on the team in RBI with 23. Jessica Powell – who leads the squad in with 26 RBI – also hit her fifth homer on the afternoon along with Caitlyn Bonham's second homerun of the year.

After being knotted up 1-all after the first two and half innings of the second game, the Tigers rattled off three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Madison Fuller plated the first run of the frame with an on-out, single to center field that scored Powell – who led off the inning with a double. Nicole Bailey followed with a double down the left field line to score Meagan Sloke. Angela Smith drove in the final run on a fielder's choice that scored Fuller.

The Tigers held the 4-1 advantage until the bottom of the fifth when they posted five spot on the board to clinch the sweep. Bonham started the scoring off with her two-run homer. Three batters later, Powell tripled down the right field line to score Fincher, who had walked previously, and Taylor Beck, who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Kelli Hartley closed out the scoring with a double that scored Powell.

Katie Ford (9-3) logged the complete game win while allowing five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

In the opening contest, the Tigers spotted the Lady Eagles six runs in their first at-bat and one in the second inning, but managed to erase the deficit with nine runs in the bottom of the third. Powell drove in the first two runs of the inning with a triple down the right field line. Following a Rebecca Schick walk, Hartley laid down a bunt that scored Powell. An Ashley Frost RBI, single pulled the Tigers within a run and a sacrifice fly by Bonham allowed UWA to tie the contest.

Beck gave the Tigers their first lead of the contest with a RBI, single that scored Frost and Fincher closed out the scoring in the frame with her first homer of the day – scoring Beck and Anna Shartzer.

The Tigers added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a Shartzer triple and two more in the fifth – the last coming on a Bonham single that scored Hartley.

Kristen Skinner (8-2) received the win in a 4.2 inning relief appearance. The Toxey, Ala., junior allowed just two hits a run with five KO's and a walk. Hannah Griffin – the UWA starter – surrendered six runs on three hits with a pair of walks.

West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 22 as the Tigers host Tuskegee in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
