West Alabama Shuts Out Tuskegee in Twinbill

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team posted a pair of shutout wins on Tuesday afternoon to run its season record to 20-6. The Tigers blasted Tuskegee 17-0 in the opening game and turned back TU 5-0 in the nightcap. Tuskegee falls to 10-8 on the campaign.

The UWA pitching staff held the Golden Lady Tigers to just four hits combined on the afternoon. Katie Ford (10-3) tossed three innings in the opening contest allowing a hit with two strikeouts and a walk. In the second outing, Kristen Skinner (9-2) pitched five innings while fanning six with a pair of walks. Ford and Skinner each allowed just one hit in their starts. Taylor Tucker threw a combined four innings in the two wins – striking out a total of six with a walk and two hits allowed.

Valisha Fincher continued to add to her homerun total as she connected on two homers in the first contest. The Tarrant, Ala., native – who was named Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Week earlier in the day - now leads the team with 10 round trippers and 29 RBI. Fincher finished the day with four hits, six RBI and four runs scored.

Caitlyn Bonham, Taylor Beck, Taylor Miller and Jessica Powell all collected three hits during the doubleheader.

The Tigers opened the first contest with seven runs in their first trip to the plate. UWA added a run in the second inning on a Rebecca Schick homer – her fourth of the season – and plated three more in the third – two of those of the bat of Fincher. The Red and White pushed the contest completely out of reach in the fourth with six runs with four coming on a grand slam by Fincher – her second grand slam in four days.

In the second outing, the Tigers again scored first as Powell drove in Fincher with a triple to right field. UWA added a pair of runs in the second inning to increase the lead to 3-0. Nicole Bailey became the first run of the frame with Kelli Hartley scoring on an Anna Shartzer double to left field.

Madison Fuller extended the margin to 4-0 with her first homerun of the season in the third inning as Miller became the final run of the day for the Red and White – scoring on a TU miscue.

West Alabama returns to GSC action with a pair of road contests beginning on Saturday, Mar. 26 against Valdosta State. The Tigers close out the road trip with a doubleheader at West Florida on Sunday, Mar. 27. First pitch at VSU is scheduled for 12 p.m. while the twinbill at UWF is slated for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for both doubleheaders at www.uwaathletics.com.
