LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama returns to the softball diamond with a pair of Gulf South Conference road contests beginning on Saturday, Mar. 26 against No. 4 Valdosta State. The Tigers (20-6) close out the road trip with a doubleheader at West Florida on Sunday, Mar. 27 with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Live stats and audio will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
UWA is coming off a pair of shutout wins on Tuesday afternoon against Tuskegee. The Tiger pitching staff held the Golden Lady Tigers to just four hits combined on the afternoon.
Katie Ford tossed three innings in the opening contest with two strikeouts and a walk. In the second outing,
Kristen Skinner pitched five innings while fanning six with a pair of walks.
Taylor Tucker threw a combined four innings in the two wins – striking out a total of six with a walk and two hits allowed.
Valisha Fincher continued to add to her homerun total as she connected on two homers in the first contest against TU. The Tarrant, Ala., native – who is the reigning Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Week - now leads the team with 10 round trippers and 29 RBI. Fincher stands second on the team in batting average at .453.
On the season, sophomore
Anna Shartzer leads the Tigers with a .468 batting average.
Jessica Powell is second on the team with 26 RBI and five homers. Skinner and Ford have combined for 19 of West Alabama's 20 wins this season. Skinner is 9-2 on the season and leads the team in innings pitched (69.2) and strikeouts (70). Ford is 10-3 on the campaign and second on the team in innings pitched (61.2) and strikeouts (52).
Nationally-ranked VSU enters the weekend sporting a 12-4 record and 3-3 in the GSC after sweeping West Georgia last weekend. Ashley Steinhilber leads the Blazers with a .400 batting average while Natalia Morozova has driven in a team-leading 18 RBI. Holly Satterfield stands as the ace in the circle with a 7-2 record. Satterfield holds a 0.68 ERA and has struck out 37.
The Argonauts are 10-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference after coming off their first GSC road trip of the season. UWF was swept by West Georgia 6-5 and 3-0 before losing twice to then No. 3 UAH 9-1 and 10-3. Amber Ingram and Kaley Kania pace the Argos at the dish with .424 and .423 batting averages respectively while Crystal Thompson has tallied a team-best 22 RBI. Ashliegh McLean has won eight of UWF's 10 victories on the campaign while fanning 45 – also a team-best.
