Women's Tennis Crushes Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Recording its sixth shutout of the season, the University of West Alabama women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 sweep on the road at Montevallo on Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference victory pushes the UWA record to 9-7 on the season.

The Tigers breezed through doubles play as the No. 2 and No. 3 pairs from UWA – Natalia Cardenas with Dasha Popova and Katy Shoptaugh with Courtney McDonald – both registered 8-1 victories, while the No. 1 duo of Angy Cuellar and Emily Gerding won by an 8-4 score.

In singles action, Popova and Cuellar were dominant as each won without 6-0, 6-0, while Shoptaugh dropped just one game in winning 6-0, 6-1. McDonald was a 6-1, 6-1 victor as winning by scores of 6-1, 6-2 was Cardenas. Gerding won a tough first set 7-5 before dispatching her opponent 6-2 in the second.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday at LeMoyne-Owen with a match time of 2 p.m.
