PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Alabama softball team split its Gulf South Conference doubleheader at West Florida on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (21-8, 1-6 GSC) claimed the opening contest 8-1 before falling 5-1 in the second game of the double dip. UWF improved to 13-11 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
UWA rattled off eight runs on 11 hits in the opening game against the Argos – including three homeruns in the game. After the Tigers scored the first run of the outing on a
Meagan Sloke RBI double in the second inning,
Valisha Fincher cranked her 40th career homerun over the right field fence to leadoff the third inning.
The Red and White added three runs in the sixth and seventh frames to capture its first conference win of the season.
Rebecca Schick led off the sixth inning with her fifth homer of the season. Later in the inning,
Madison Fuller connected on her second dinger of the season –pushing Sloke across the dish. Sloke garnered a one-out single to reach base. After Hartley became the first run of the seventh inning,
Ashley Frost and
Angela Smith scored on an
Anna Shartzer two-out single.
Kristen Skinner (10-3) scattered three hits in the complete game decision. The Toxey, Ala., junior fanned five in the win and allowed one walk. Skinner gave up UWF's lone run in the seventh inning.
In the second game of the twinbill, UWF jumped on the board with a run in its first at-bat as Karri Bisbee scored on an Amber Ingram bunt single. Ingram added two more Argo runs in the fourth inning with a single to right field – pushing their lead to 3-1.
The Tigers plated their only run in the fifth inning as Shartzer singled through the right side to score Sloke, who reached on a one-out single.
UWF added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 5-1 and secure the victory.
Hannah Griffin (1-2) received the loss with 3.1 innings pitched. Griffin allowed three runs on five hits with a trio of walks in the start.
Taylor Tucker and Skinner each tossed in relief. Tucker gave up a walk in an inning in the circle while Skinner pitched the final 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on two hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout.
