CARROLLTON, Ga. – Winning for the fifth straight time, the University of West Alabama women's tennis team throttled West Georgia on Friday by a 9-0 score. The win moves UWA to 7-4 (3-0 GSC) on the year.
The ladies dominated doubles play, allowing the Wolves to only take a total of three games.
Katy Shoptaugh and
Dasha Popova shut out their opponents by an 8-0 score, while
Emily Gerding and
Natalia Cardenas joined together for an 8-1 victory.
Angy Cuellar and
Courtney McDonald won by an 8-2 margin.
All the UWA players won in straight sets in singles action, but Gerding and Shoptaugh were most impressive as both won without dropping a game. Cuellar and Cardenas won by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores while Popova dropped just one game as well in winning 6-1, 6-0. McDonald was a 6-1, 6-3 victor.
The Tigers return to action this weekend at the Morehouse Invitational with a 1 p.m. contest against Clark Atlanta on Saturday kicking things off.
