Tiger Softball Travels to Tuskegee on Tuesday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team announces a change in the 2011 schedule. UWA (14-2) will travel to Tuskegee University on Tuesday, Mar. 8. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon but has been moved due to the threat of inclement weather.

The Tuesday twinbill is the first meeting between the two in-state institutions.

Eight Tigers are hitting .333-plus led by Anna Shartzer's .479 batting clip. Jessica Powell – who is batting .476 – leads the team in RBI with 17. Powell is one of six players with at least 10 RBI on the season. Kelli Hartley and Rebecca Schick are tied for second in RBI with 13 each. Valisha Fincher and Nicole Bailey each have 12 with Ashley Frost adding 10 RBI.

In the circle, Kristen Skinner and Katie Ford have combined for 13 of UWA's 14 victories on the season. Skinner (6-0) has tossed 41.2 innings with 44 strikeouts – both marks are tops on the team – and recorded two saves. Ford (7-1) has pitched the second most innings with 36 and fanned 37 of the opposition's batters. Hannah Griffin (1-1) has the only other Tiger win in the circle and has two combined shutouts. Taylor Tucker has two saves in six appearances.

Tuskegee enters the doubleheader with a 2-2 record following a sweep of Fort Valley State on Feb. 25. The Lady Golden Tigers were slated to face Kentucky State for a pair of doubleheaders which were cancelled.

Following the contests at Tuskegee, West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 10, with a doubleheader at Miles College. The Tigers and MC have played three times this season with UWA getting the best of the Golden Bears in all three outings.
