TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team completed a sweep of Tuskegee on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 victory in the opening game and 10-1 win in the nightcap. UWA - which improved to 16-2 on the campaign –ran its win streak to eight games with the two triumphs.
In the second game of the twinbill, UWA recorded back-to-back, four-run, innings to clinch the sweep. The first four spot was posted in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
Kelli Hartley drove in the first run of the inning with a single that plated
Anna Shartzer. After
Nicole Bailey scored on a bases loaded walk and
Valisha Fincher scored on a wild pitch, Hartley scored on an
Angela Smith single through the left side.
Rebecca Schick plated the first two runs of the fourth – starting the second, four-run frame. Hartley scored a batter later on a fielder's choice. The final run came on a TU fielding error – allowing
Meagan Sloke to score from second.
Fincher was the first run of the outing as she scored on a Hartley double in the Tigers' first at-bat. Schick became the second run with a one-out, homerun to center field in the second inning.
Katie Ford (8-1) tossed all five innings in the win. Ford fanned four combined with three walks and two hits in the outing.
A three-run, fifth inning opened up the first contest as
Anna Shartzer and Fincher each cranked out solo homeruns. Shartzer led the inning off with a homer to left field and one batter later Fincher blasted one over the right center field fence. Schick drove in the other run of the frame with a single that scored
Kelli Hartley.
Kristen Skinner (7-0) pitched six innings in the win. Skinner struck out seven while scattering three hits and the lone Lady Golden Tiger run.
Taylor Tucker threw an inning in relief with a strikeout and a pair of walks.
The Tigers scored their first run of the contest in the second inning as Smith scored
Ashley Frost. TU answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, but UWA regained the lead with a run in the third inning as Shartzer scored on a Hartley single.
UWA's contest against scheduled for Thursday at Miles College has been moved to Apr. 19, in Fairfield, Ala. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 13, as the Tigers host North Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
