Tigers Host No. 1 UAH and West Georgia This Weekend

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama softball team hosts top-ranked UAH on Saturday, Apr.2 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. UWA will hold a fundraiser for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation in conjunction with the Gulf South Conference doubleheader. Admission is $5 for adults. Children ages 14 and under will be admitted free along with UWA students with valid IDs. Donations will also be accepted with all proceeds going to FOJ.

The twinbill is the first of a pair of GSC contests this weekend for the Tigers as UWA hosts West Georgia on Sunday, Apr. 3 at 1 p.m. Live stats for both double dips will be available at www.uwaaathletics.com.

The Red and White logged their first win in conference action last weekend with an 8-1 victory at West Florida. The Tigers split the doubleheader with the Argos as UWF claimed the second outing 5-1.

On the season, sophomore Anna Shartzer leads the Tigers with a .466 batting average followed by senior Valisha Fincher, who is sporting a .458 average at the plate. Fincher continues to add to her career homerun mark as the Tarrant, Ala., native has belted 40 homers in her four seasons with the Red and White. Fincher is tied for the top spot in homeruns in the GSC with UWG's Nicole Yancey as each has hit 11 homers on the season.

Fincher along with senior teammate Jessica Powell lead the Tigers in RBI this season with 30 and 28 runs driven in respectively. Powell also sits second on the team in homeruns with five.

Junior Kristen Skinner and senior Katie Ford have combined for 20 of West Alabama's 21 wins. The pair sport identical 10-3 records on the season while Skinner leads the team in innings pitched (84.1) and strikeouts (82). Ford sits second in both categories with 61.2 innings tossed and 52 strikeouts.

UAH, which enters the weekend riding an 11-game win streak, boasts a spotless 8-0 GSC record and stands 24-1-1 overall. A trio of Chargers have tallied .400-plus batting averages this season led by Mary Kelley's .441 hitting clip. Kathryn Whitlock (.420) and Sarah Nickey (.400) stand second and third on the team in batting averages. Kelley also leads the team in RBI with 31. In the circle, Whitney Toler and Alex Lewis pace the UAH hurlers. Toler has logged a team-best 56.2 innings pitched while Lewis leads the Chargers with a 0.18 ERA. The duo has combined for 126 strikeouts on the season.

UWG is 13-15 overall and 2-6 in the conference as they come into the weekend slate. Yancey paces the Wolves offensively with a .414 batting average and 26 RBI. Yancey is also one of UWG's top pitchers with a 4.68 ERA and 73.1 innings tossed. Antoinette Diaz leads the team in innings pitched with 89 and has recorded an 8-7 record along with a 4.48 ERA and 70 strikeouts.
