DECATUR, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team completed a perfect 7-0 run through the Gulf South Conference Crossover with a 7-2 win against Ouachita Baptist and a 3-1 victory over Arkansas Tech to improve to 28-12 and 8-10 in conference play. UWA outscored its West opposition 53-17 over the weekend.
It marks the first time under
Will Atkinson that the Tigers claimed all seven outings in the Crossover and the second time the Red and White have gone perfect since his arrival in 2008.
Leading 2-1 through the first two innings, UWA doubled its run total in the third with a pair of runs –the first coming on a
Kelli Hartley double to left field that scored
Valisha Fincher.
Jessica Powell became the second run of the frame scoring on a wild pitch.
After OBU added a run in the top of the fifth,
Madison Fuller hit her first homerun of the season with two outs, scoring the first of two runs in the frame.
Taylor Miller followed with a single up the middle and then scored on an
Anna Shartzer double to left field.
Fincher moved closer to the program's homerun record with her 43rd of the season in the sixth inning to round out the Tigers runs in the contest. The homer was her 14th of the season.
Katie Ford (12-3) picked up the win in a complete game performance while fanning seven hitters and allowing seven hits with four walks. The seven K's ties a season-high for the Garden City, Kan., senior.
Powell pushed all the runs the Tigers would need across the dish in the second game with a three-run homer to left field in the first inning. Shartzer and Fincher each walked in the frame to account for the two runs on Powell's homer.
Kristen Skinner (14-4) struck out a career-high 13 batters in the complete game win while scattering hits with three walks.
ATU, which scratched its only run across the board in the fourth inning, did pose a threat to the Red and White's lead in the sixth inning with two aboard and only one out, but Skinner retired the following two Golden Sun hitters swinging to slam the door.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 16 when it hosts West Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
