LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team concluded Senior Day with a sweep of West Florida on Saturday afternoon. UWA, which improved to 30-12 and 10-10 in GSC action, claimed game one 8-7 in its final at-bat and mercy-ruled the Argos 8-0 to complete the sweep. UWF falls to 19-18 and 8-13 in conference play.
Kristen Skinner (15-4) set the program's single-game strikeout record with 15 en route to a complete game win. The Toxey, Ala., junior played a part in all 15 of the Tiger putouts while allowing just one Argo to reach base.
The Tigers broke the second game of the twinbill open by plastering five runs on the board in the second inning. With two down in the frame and a runner aboard,
Angela Smith singled up the middle to score
Ashley Frost, who doubled earlier in the inning. Smith later scored on a
Taylor Beck single to center field.
Valisha Fincher then followed with her 44th career homerun with a three-run blast down the left field line to cap the scoring in the frame. The homer tied the senior's single-season best of 15 – a mark that stands as the best in the GSC this season.
Meagan Sloke drove in the first run of a three-run, fourth inning that completed the mercy-rule win for UWA. Sloke singled through the right side, with the bases loaded, to plate
Anna Shartzer. With the bases still full,
Madison Fuller then drew a walk to plate the second run of the inning. A Frost sacrifice bunt capped the scoring in the frame.
In the opening outing of the day, the Tigers jumped out a 7-3 lead through five innings, but a four-run, sixth inning for UWF knotted the affair at 7-all. After the Argos left the bases full in their half of the seventh leaving, the Red and White came up with some late game heroics to claim the win.
Senior
Caitlyn Bonham became the first runner to reach base with a single to left field to keep the inning alive. Following back-to-back walks of Smith and Shartzer to load the bases for the Tigers, a throwing error by the Argos third basemen allowed Bonham to scored and capture the opening game victory.
Hannah Griffin (3-3) logged the win in the circle with two innings pitched in a relief appearance. Griffin struck out one, walked a pair and surrendered four hits. UWA starter
Katie Ford tossed five innings with a pair of punch-outs, three walks and seven runs allowed on nine hits.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, Apr. 17 as the Tigers host Valdosta State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with live stats available at www.uwaathletics.com.
