Tigers Swept by No. 4 Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team dropped a Sunday doubleheader to No. 4 Valdosta State. The Tigers, who fall to 30-14 overall and 10-12 in Gulf South Conference action, were edged 2-0 in the first outing and fell 7-3 in the second game of the twinbill.

The Blazers (29-6, 16-5 GSC) scored all the runs they needed in the first inning of the opening contest as Colette Rollins hit a two-run, two out homer to left field that also scored Marti Littlefield. Littlefield singled through the left side.

Kristen Skinner (15-5) was saddled with the loss in a complete game effort. The Toxey, Ala., junior fanned six while scattering five hits along with the two VSU runs.

The Tigers registered just two hits in the affair and left four stranded – all in scoring position. The biggest UWA threat came in the fourth inning as the Red and White loaded the bases with one away, but were unable to plate a run as Jessica Powell and Ashley Frost were left standing as the inning came to a close. Anna Shartzer and Angela Smith were the only other runners left on base for the Tigers in the game as they were stranded in the third.

In the second game, the Blazers again used the long ball to strike first – this time Littlefield homered to center to score Samantha Posey, who led the inning off with a single through the right side.

UWA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Frost doubled to left center to score Valisha Fincher and Shartzer.

A Posey single to right field posted the first two of three-run, inning as Ashley Steinhilber and Sarah Vaughn scored. Melessa Jackson rounded out the scoring as she crossed the dish on a Morgan Johnson sacrifice fly to right.

The Tigers nipped into the deficit in the third as Powell led of the frame with a homer to left field. The dinger was the ninth of the season for the Orangevale, Calif., senior, which ranks second on the team.

Posey again would strike lifting a two-run, homer down the left field line to pad the VSU lead in the fourth inning.

Katie Ford (12-4) tossed just three innings in the start while allowing seven runs on nine hits with a pair of walks. Hannah Griffin pitched the final four innings fanning two while scattering a pair of hits in the relief appearance.

West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 19 as the Tigers travel to Fairfield, Ala. to face Miles College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
