Tigers Swept by West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team dropped its second straight Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon as UWA (21-12, 1-10 GSC) fell 8-3 and 6-1 to West Georgia. The Wolves improved to 17-15 on the season and 6-6 in the conference.

The Tigers struck first in the second game of the twinbill as Anna Shartzer scored on a Valisha Fincher double to left center in the first inning. Shartzer along with Taylor Beck posted back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, but Beck would be left stranded on the bases – one of 11 left on base for the Red and White during the affair and 18 for the afternoon.

UWA starter Hannah Griffin (1-3) pitched 3.2 innings with four runs allowed on four hits with nine walks and a strikeout. Kristen Skinner tossed 2.1 innings in relief allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts while Taylor Tucker threw an inning surrendering a run on three hits with a 'K'.

UWG plated two runs in the second inning to answer the Tigers' lone run in the first. After Kelsey Francen drove in the first Wolves' run, Kristin Hall scored on a bases loaded walk to put the Blue and Red in front. The Wolves extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning with a pair of runs – both on bases loaded walks. UWG added a run in the fifth and another in the seventh to close out the scoring and securing the sweep.

Nicole Yancey (7-8) pitched in the complete game win allowing six hits along with five walks and a strikeout.

In the opening game, the Tigers plated their first run in their first trip to the plate as Shartzer scored on a Jessica Powell sacrifice fly to center field. Powell finished with a .500 batting average on the day.

The Wolves answered with six in the second inning behind a pair of homeruns with the first a grand slam by Monica Mills. Yancey followed two batters later with a two-run homer.

After Kristin Hall extended UWG's lead to 7-1 with a RBI single in the third inning, Yancey followed with her second homer of the day – a leadoff dinger in the fourth – to conclude the Wolves' scoring.

UWA pushed its final two runs across the dish in the fifth inning as Powell homered to left field, scoring Beck, who led the frame off with a walk.

Ashley Frost (0-1) took the loss in the circle allowing six runs on seven hits in two innings. Griffin tossed the final five frames allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks.

Antoinette Diaz (10-7) tossed the complete seven innings giving up all three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.

West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Apr. 7 as the Tigers face off against Delta State in the first game of the GSC Crossover in Decatur, Ala. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
