Tigers Travel to West Georgia for GSC Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
After two weeks away from game action, the University of West Alabama softball team returns to the diamond on Sunday, May 1 as the Tigers travel to Carrollton, Ga. to face West Georgia in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.

The Tigers' (30-14, 10-12 GSC) last outing came on Sunday, April 17, a pair of losses to then fourth-ranked Valdosta State to conclude the 2011 home slate for the Red and White. UWA had swept West Florida the day prior to run its win streak to nine games after an impressive 7-0 showing at the GSC Crossover.

On the season, sophomore Anna Shartzerleads the Tigers with a .443 batting average followed by senior Valisha Fincher's .415 clip at the plate. Fincher also leads the Red and White in RBI (46) and homeruns (15). The Tarrant, Ala., native is one home run shy of tying the school record of 45. Senior Jessica Powell is second on the team in RBI with 42 and ranks third on the team in batting average with a .384 mark.

Junior Kristen Skinner and senior Katie Ford have combined for 27 of West Alabama's 30 wins this season with junior Hannah Griffin picking up the other three victories in the circle. Skinner stands at 15-5 on the season while leading the team in innings pitched (125.2) and strikeouts (135). Ford, who is 12-4 on the campaign, is second in innings pitched (83.1) and strikeouts (63). Griffin, who is 3-3, has fanned 30 batters in 44.2 innings.

UAH and Valdosta State have locked up spots in the GSC Softball Tournament in Southaven, Miss., May 6-8. West Alabama along with North Alabama, West Florida and West Georgia are all vying for the final two slots from the East Division.
