Tigers Snap Streak with 6-1 Win over Delta State

DECATUR, Ala. –
A four-run, fifth inning guided the University of West Alabama softball team to a 6-1 victory over Delta State on the first day of the Gulf South Conference Crossover. UWA (22-12, 2-10 GSC) pounded out 12 hits en route to snapping its five-game losing skid. The Lady Statesmen fall to 12-22 on the season and 4-9 in conference.

Anna Shartzer, Taylor Beck and Valisha Fincher posted multi hits on the afternoon with Beck and Fincher each driving in multiple runs in the effort. All nine Tiger starters recorded at least one hit in the contest.

Back-to-back singles by Caitlyn Bonham and Shartzer setup up a 2-RBI double for Beck to score the first two of UWA's four runs in the fifth frame. Following a sacrifice bunt by Fincher to move Beck to third with one out, Jessica Powell singled to left field to plate Beck for the Tigers' fifth run of the outing. Rebecca Schick concluded the squad's scoring output with a double down the left field line to score Powell.

Kristen Skinner (11-4) allowed five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings in the circle to garner the win. Hannah Griffin pitched the final two frames in relief giving up a hit and one walk.

Brittany Gonzales (4-13) took the loss for the Lady Statesmen with 4.1 innings in the start. Gonzales surrendered all six UWA runs on nine hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Sara Davis tossed the final 2.2 innings for DSU with two strikeouts and three hits allowed.

UWA opened the contest with a run in the first and third inning – both driven in by Fincher. The senior doubled in the first inning to plate Shartzer, who walked to leadoff the inning, and singled in third to score Beck, who roped a two-out, double to reach base.

Lauren Lewis singled to left center, in the fourth inning, to cut the Red and White's lead in half with DSU's only run of the contest.

The Tigers square off against Southern Arkansas and the University of Arkansas at Monticello on Friday, Apr. 8. The contest against the Lady Muleriders is scheduled for 12 p.m. followed by the 2 p.m. outing against the Cotton Blossoms. Live stats will be available for all contests.
