WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of West Alabama softball team handed Rollins College just its third loss of the season as UWA upset the Tars 4-2 in nine innings to move on in the winner's bracket in the NCAA Division II South Two Regional. The Tigers face Tampa at Noon CST on Saturday, May 14.
Jessica Powell drove in all four UWA runs in the contest, but none more important than the pair in ninth inning to put the Red and White in front and three outs from the win, just the Tigers' second in program history in the NCAA Regional action. The loss was the first for the Tars since Apr. 3 - a 3-1 victory by Tampa in Winter Park.
With two on, Powell delivered two out single that scored
Anna Shartzer and
Valisha Fincher pushing the Tigers into the lead. The senior from Orangevale, Calif., finished the night with two hits in the outing.
UWA jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in its trip to the plate. With two on and one out, Powell doubled to left field to score the same pair to start the contest. Shartzer and Fincher both reached on walks.
Kristen Skinner (18-6) threw all nine innings in the victory. The junior right-hander fanned six with five walks and nine hits allowed in her longest outing of the season.
Hope Bitzer (18-1) suffered her first loss of the season with a complete game performance.
The Tars went down in order in their first two at-bats, but scratched a run across in the third inning as Krista Rodden singled to third base scoring Monica Meadows. After the Red and White went down in order in the top of the fourth inning, Lawna Hunter singled through the left side to score Veronica Alred and tie the contest at 2-all.
RC threatened to take the lead in the fifth inning as they left a pair stranded as Hunter grounded out to end the inning. The Tars finished the contest leaving 12 runners on base.
The Tigers looked to regain control with chances in the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't manage to push a run across the plate.
Caitlyn Bonham led things off with a double in the seventh. Shartzer followed one batter later with a single through the left side, but Bonham was erased for the second out as she was thrown out trying to score on the hit. Shartzer advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was left on the bases in the inning.
The Red and White loaded the bases in the eighth looking to retake the lead, but again held scoreless – this time leaving the bases juiced. Fincher drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The senior then gobbled up third on a passed ball. Following a strikeout,
Ashley Frost and
Taylor Miller each walked to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning. UWA left 12 on the bases.
