Tiger Softball Travels to Huntsville for South Super Regional

The University of West Alabama softball team continues its run through the NCAA Division II Championships as the Tigers travel to Huntsville, Ala., for the South Super Regional. Play begins on Friday, May 20 at 4 p.m. Live stats, live audio and a live blog will be available at www.uwaathletics.com. The broadcast can also be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM.

UWA (37-17) clinched its first regional title in program history on Monday morning with a 3-1 victory over Arkansas-Monticello. The Red and White ran through the regional bracket with a 3-1 mark with the only loss coming in a 3-0 decision to the Cotton Blossoms on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers opened regional play with a 4-2, nine-inning victory over host Rollins College and followed that with a 2-1 win over Tampa.

Senior Jessica Powell led the Tigers at the dish with a .385 batting average and drove in six of the Red and White's nine runs over the weekend while freshman Taylor Beck knocked in two. Beck finished the regional third on the team in batting average with a .286 mark. Senior Valisha Fincher tallied a .364 hitting clip which stood second on the squad.

Junior Kristen Skinner started all four outings of the regional and posted a 3-1 record. Skinner fanned 25 batters in 24.2 innings or work in the circle while scattering 21 hits with 14 walks. The Toxey, Ala., native posted a 1.99 ERA while holding opponents to a .223 batting average. Hannah Griffin also saw action during the weekend with 5.1 innings on the rubber. Griffin struck out a pair and walked five with four hits allowed.

For the season, Anna Shartzer leads the way in batting average with a .442 hitting clip while Fincher sits second at .413. Fincher ranks second on the team in RBI with 48 while Powell, who is third on the team in batting average with a .380, tops the list with 52 RBI. Fincher and Powell also lead the Tigers in home runs. Fincher has belted 15 on the campaign and stands one short of tying the school record of 45. Powell has posted 11 dingers with Rebecca Schick third on the squad with seven on the season. Shartzer sits fourth on the team's home run list with five on the year.

In the circle, the duo of Skinner and Katie Ford has recorded 34 of the Tigers' 37 wins. Skinner leads the team with 170.2 innings pitched and 174 strikeouts while Ford, who leads the program in winning percentage and is fifth all-time in wins, has 102 innings on the rubber with 72 Ks on the campaign. Hannah Griffin has stepped up for the Tigers coming down the stretch picking up three wins in the circle with 33 strikeouts in 50.1 innings tossed.
